Cyclists in Leicester could soon benefit from a £150, 000 refurbishment of the city’s Bike Park.

The cycling facility – located next to the Town Hall – will be improved with new secure city centre parking, as well as bike hire and maintenance services.

Leicester City Council cycling co-ordinator Andy Salkeld said, “The Bike Park is a huge asset to the city but a refurbishment is long overdue.

We want it to be a central hub for all things cycling and especially for new and family cyclists.

“To help people taking to two wheels in the New Year – and to say sorry for any disruption – we are pleased to offer free secure parking and Bike Park membership during the refurbishment.

A basic mechanic service will also be maintained for new and existing customers.

The move comes as Leicester City Council takes over management of the scheme on January 4 from previous operators Groundwork Leicester and Leicestershire, whose contract is coming to an end.

The council is also working closely with local bike projects, training providers, cycle clubs and event organisers to provide a one-stop shop for all things bike-related in 2011.

Leicester City Council's cabinet member for regeneration and transport Councillor Abdul Osman added, “A modern, well-located and secure bike park is key to encouraging more people to cycle into the city centre.

“People will also be able to sign up for cycle training, the Cycle Challenge and Sky Ride at the Bike Park from January.”

Expressions of interest in a new lease will be invited once the refurbishment is complete.

The Bike Park is currently closed for the Christmas holidays but will re-open at 8am on Tuesday January 4.
