Rogue Traders Warning in East Midlands

Ben Aulakh

Dodgy door-to-door traders offering low cost line painting on roads and car parks have been targeting businesses and schools in Northamptonshire.

The County Council is warning business owners, schools, churches and community groups to be vigilant in the wake of a spate of incidents involving the rogue traders.

The council’s trading standards service has received numerous reports from local people about salesman, who have claimed to be working on behalf of the council or its contractors.

Their tactic has been to tell unwitting members of the public that there is surplus paint to be used following the completion of line marking works.

However, work undertaken by rogue traders is likely to be over-priced, completed to a poor standard and cost a large amount to correct.

Councillor Andre Gonzalez de Savage, County Council Cabinet Member for customers and communities said “Trading standards receive a lot of complaints about rogue traders and bogus callers and we remain committed to fighting this issue.”

Anyone who needs advice can contact trading standards by telephoning Consumer Direct on 08454 040506.

The 'Buy With Confidence' scheme details fully vetted and Trading Standards Registered tradesman or business, information can be found online or by calling Northamptonshire County Council 01604 236236.

The public should inform Trading Standards if they, or somebody they know, has been approached by calling 08454 04 05 06 or via tradestd@northamptonshire.gov.uk.
